IN THE WINTER BARN

The bull stands in the barn, head thrust through bars.
He knows the rub of steel, the slick of chewed hay,
the men who come to straw out, bed down.
His coat is winter-worn, dust-choked

but he waits for sleek spring. The haze
of early sun, the shininess of grass
is stored within his cells. In the bloom
of his small eye, the river and the sky.
